FedEx has commenced the deployment of its first electric vans in Spain, marking a significant step towards sustainable logistics in the country. The initiative involves the addition of 16 Mercedes-Benz eSprinters to FedEx’s parcel collection and delivery routes in the center of Madrid, with plans to introduce another 17 electric vans in Barcelona shortly.
To support the electric fleet, a total of 33 charging points will be installed at locations in Madrid and Barcelona. These charging stations will be powered by certified green electricity and will feature dynamic load management to ensure vehicles are adequately charged overnight, as per FedEx Express Europe.

While not explicitly stated, it is likely that the 33 vehicles for Spain are not the newly revised eSprinter model. Mercedes-Benz Vans introduced a technically new but visually similar successor in 2023, featuring a significantly larger battery capacity of 56, 81, or 113 kWh. The previous generation, still equipped with smaller batteries, remains suitable for delivery operations in Madrid and Barcelona, especially with each vehicle having its own charging point.
FedEx’s experience with electric vans includes 23 eSprinters in London, twelve units in Amsterdam, and soon-to-be 28 eSprinters for the Paris region. Ian Silverton, Managing Director Ground Operations, FedEx Express Spain, expressed excitement about the initiative, stating, “Our employees and customers alike are excited to see the first of these vehicles out and about in Madrid and Barcelona, making low and zero emissions pickup and delivery more commonplace in Spain.”

David Perdomo Hollatz, Head of Sales & Marketing Mercedes-Benz Vans Region Europe & Germany, highlighted the partnership’s impact, stating, “I am pleased that our battery-electric eSprinters are helping FedEx Express towards its own goals in the area of locally emission-free delivery. Reliability and customer orientation are important values, in logistics as well as in vehicle manufacturing.”
