BYD has recently unveiled its first-ever pickup truck, the BYD Shark, marking the company’s foray into a segment traditionally dominated by American and Japanese carmakers. Despite being a newcomer, the Shark boasts impressive specifications and features, making it a compelling option in the pickup truck market.

The Shark will be available not only in Mexico but also in Brazil, Europe, and Australia, expanding BYD’s presence in key markets worldwide. While BYD is renowned for its electric vehicles, the Shark will also cater to customers looking for hybrid options.

The Shark measures 214 inches long, 77.5 inches wide, and 75.5 inches tall, making it slightly larger than the Ford Ranger. It features a wheelbase of 128.3 inches and offers impressive towing and payload capacities of 5,511 pounds and 1,840 pounds, respectively.

Riding on a body-on-frame platform known as the DMO platform, the Shark utilizes a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter turbo engine with two electric motors (one on each axle), delivering a total output of 430 horsepower. This setup allows the truck to accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 5.7 seconds.

The Shark is equipped with BYD’s cutting-edge Blade battery, known for its safety and durability. The cells are integrated into the chassis structure, contributing to the overall rigidity and safety of the vehicle.

The design of the Shark draws inspiration from modern SUVs and pickup trucks, featuring a full-width LED light bar and a prominent BYD logo on the radiator grille. The black cladding adds to its rugged off-road appearance.

Inside, the Shark boasts a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen, similar to the BYD Seal, along with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. It also offers a 12-inch heads-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and bidirectional charging capabilities.

In Mexico, the Shark will be available in two variants: GL and GS. The GL starts at 899,980 Mexican pesos (approximately $53,432), while the GS is priced at about 969,800 pesos ($57,577). These prices position the Shark competitively against rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Overall, the BYD Shark offers a compelling combination of performance, technology, and design, making it a noteworthy contender in the pickup truck segment.
