Everything You Should know About 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric

Hyundai has just unveiled its all-electric Kona, the latest addition to its popular SUV lineup. The second-generation Kona promises to take on the B-SUV segment competitors with its larger size, greater driving range, and advanced technology features.

One of the most important features for electric vehicle (EV) owners is driving range, and the new Kona delivers with a range of up to 490km (WLTP) thanks to its larger 65.4 kWh battery. The electric motor powering the front wheels has been upgraded to 160kW (214hp), 10kW more than the previous model, but interestingly, the torque figure has been reduced from the previous model’s 395Nm (291 lb-ft) to 255Nm (188lb-ft).

For those who don’t require such a long range, the standard range vehicle is equipped with a 48.4kWh battery and a 114.6kW (154hp) electric motor, with an estimated WLTP range of 342km (212 miles).

The Kona’s powertrain uses 400V architecture, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% State of Charge (SoC) in just 41 minutes, according to Hyundai. Both versions of the Kona Electric support Vehicle-2-Load functionality, with European specification offering a maximum load of 3.13 kVA and North American vehicles offering up to 1.63 kVA.

The new Kona Electric is a larger vehicle than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase and increased overall length, resulting in improved rear legroom and kneeroom. The trunk has also grown, with 466 liters of cargo space and an additional 27 liters available in the frunk.

But it’s the technology department that really sets the new Kona apart. Hyundai has equipped its electric SUV with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that were previously only available in the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. The list of functions is extensive, including Driver Status Monitor, remote Smart Parking, Blind Spot Monitor, Forward Collision Avoidance 2.0, and Highway Driving Assist 2.

All of these ADAS functions make the new Kona Electric one of the most advanced B-segment SUVs on the market.

Inside, the Kona offers plenty of room, with two new 12.3-inch screens and a 12-inch color Head-Up Display (HUD). The graphic interface is all new and features high-quality advanced graphics, while the 8-speaker Bose Premium sound system takes care of the entertainment. Numerous USB-C sockets ensure that any device can be quickly charged.

Hyundai has promised that OTA upgrades will be supported, and that the Bluelink Streaming service will be offered at a later time for video and music streaming. The Kona also comes with i-Pedal driving mode for those who enjoy one-pedal driving, while the Smart Regenerative System adjusts the regen braking automatically without the need for fiddly options.

The new Kona Electric represents a significant update for Hyundai, with a completely new vehicle that’s much larger and better than the outgoing model. Pricing information has yet to be announced, but deliveries are planned for this summer. With its advanced technology features and impressive driving range, the new Kona Electric is sure to be a hit among EV enthusiasts and SUV lovers alike.
