H2 Mobility has inaugurated what it describes as the most powerful hydrogen refuelling station in Europe, with a daily capacity of up to five tonnes. The high-performance site, located on Höherweg in Düsseldorf, is designed primarily for commercial fuel cell vehicles and features the ability to refuel up to three vehicles simultaneously.
The station is part of a joint project with Stadtwerke Düsseldorf and local public transport operator Rheinbahn, which also coordinated hydrogen production, infrastructure, and usage. “This filling station is a milestone for hydrogen mobility in Europe,” said Frank Fronzke, Managing Director and COO of H2 Mobility. “With our innovative high-performance technology, we enable fast, flexible refuelling for buses, trucks and cars – and thus make a concrete contribution to the transport transition.”
Initially, hydrogen for the station will be delivered, but from next year, it will be produced on-site using an electrolyser powered by electricity from Stadtwerke Düsseldorf’s waste incineration plant. “This regional energy cycle reduces emissions significantly and sustainably,” the company said. Federal support for the project was provided under the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (Phase 2), with €3.14 million granted for the station and €1.21 million for the electrolyser.
Rheinbahn, Düsseldorf’s public transport company, is among the key users of the new facility, which is located near its Lierenfeld depot. “The new hydrogen refuelling station marks another milestone on our journey towards emission-free mobility,” said Annette Grabbe, Rheinbahn board member. “We are now optimally positioned in terms of infrastructure to refuel our hydrogen buses flexibly and efficiently.”
