EU UNDERCOVER Project Focuses on Deep Raw Material Exploration

The UNDERCOVER research project, launched on January 1, aims to explore deep raw material deposits and improve the discovery of critical materials for the European Union. The three-year initiative involves 16 partners from Europe and beyond, including Finland, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Namibia, and Canada. The project will test new strategies and sustainable technologies to enhance the efficiency of raw material exploration at greater depths.

UNDERCOVER, which stands for ‘Unified Novel Deep ExploRation for Critical Ore discoVERy,’ is coordinated by the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). The project seeks to leverage knowledge of subsurface mineral systems to support the responsible sourcing of raw materials within the EU, in line with the EU’s 2024 law on securing critical raw materials. The initiative is designed to help address the growing demand for critical materials while ensuring a more sustainable and efficient exploration process.

The project brings together geological services, research institutions, universities, and industry groups. Notable German institutions, such as the University of Münster, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, and Supracon AG, are also involved. The project will explore new geophysical measurement methods and integrate data analysis using computer algorithms. The goal is to develop exploration techniques that are socially and environmentally responsible, as well as more effective.

With case studies planned in Finland, Portugal, and Namibia, and cooperation with other EU projects, UNDERCOVER will contribute to the EU’s efforts to secure its supply of critical raw materials. The project is funded with five million euros by the European Union.
