Epic Charging, a U.S.-based EV charging software provider, has completed one of the largest residential EV charger retrofits in the country at a condominium complex located at 600 N Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.
The project involved migrating 148 Enel X chargers to Epic’s charge point management system (CPMS), enabling smart charging capabilities for more than a quarter of the property’s 401 residential units. The initiative reflects the growing need for scalable electric vehicle infrastructure in multifamily housing.
The retrofit follows Enel X Way’s withdrawal from the U.S. market, which left several residential properties seeking alternative charging solutions. Epic Charging implemented its open protocol platform to reconfigure the network using the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), ensuring compatibility with both the existing Enel X units and newly added Autel chargers. The upgraded system is designed to accommodate future charger expansions as resident demand increases.
The project also aligns with Illinois’ goal of registering one million electric vehicles by 2030. By partnering with local utility ComEd through its Voluntary Load Reduction Program, the building can reduce strain on the grid during peak demand periods and earn incentives based on curtailed energy use.
Residents benefit from access to a mobile application and RFID-based activation, allowing them to start, schedule, monitor, and pay for charging sessions while taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates. The CPMS also offers load management and energy data tools that optimize usage, lower costs, and enhance operational efficiency for the building.
According to property industry estimates, EV charger installations can increase residential property values by as much as 15%. Epic Charging’s deployment at the Chicago condominium is part of its broader strategy to provide reliable, scalable charging solutions for multifamily developments, a segment that accounts for nearly one-third of U.S. housing.
