Enel X Way North America is set to discontinue its electric mobility business as of October 11, marking a significant disruption for owners of JuiceBox home chargers.
The Italian energy group’s subsidiary will shut down all software and connectivity services for the chargers, affecting the ability to remotely control and monitor charging processes. However, a solution for public fast charging appears to be on the horizon.
Enel X Way had initially planned to deploy two million charging points across North America by 2030, focusing on private charging infrastructure like the JuiceBox wallbox.
The company’s withdrawal is attributed to challenging financial conditions, including high interest rates and evolving market dynamics in the US and Canada. Unlike other markets, Enel only sold charging hardware and software in North America, without offering bundled energy services.
As part of the exit, the Enel X Way software infrastructure will also be shut down, with a third-party company handling the remaining obligations and communication with customers. EV owners can still use the JuiceBox for charging, but all associated connectivity services, including the Enel X Way app, will be disabled.
This will prevent users from planning or controlling charging remotely. Commercial charging points may face even more severe disruptions, as the backend software for billing and authentication will be terminated.
In response, ChargeLab has stepped forward to offer a potential solution for commercial users. The company has invited affected site hosts to migrate their services before Enel X Way’s servers are permanently disabled, ensuring continuity for public charging networks.
