Automotive software specialist Embotech and Cariad, the software arm of Volkswagen Group, said they have successfully completed a proof of concept for Automated Vehicle Marshalling (AVM), demonstrating autonomous vehicle movement in complex production and logistics settings.
The project used a Volkswagen ID.3 to validate the software’s ability to plan trajectories in real time and adapt dynamically to changing conditions, including mixed traffic and confined spaces. The companies said the trial confirms the feasibility of deploying autonomous driving functions within factory and logistics operations.

During testing, the AVM system demonstrated precise execution of complex manoeuvres such as reverse driving, tight-space parking and obstacle avoidance, while continuously recalculating routes when conditions changed. Unlike systems based on fixed paths, the software plans vehicle trajectories in real time, allowing it to operate flexibly across different environments and vehicle platforms.

“The proof of concept shows that our solution can reliably handle the complexity of real production environments,” said Alexander Domahidi, chief technology officer at Embotech. “It is designed to scale across different vehicle brands and layouts while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.”

Cariad said the collaboration confirmed that the technology can be applied across a multi-brand vehicle portfolio, a key requirement for large automotive groups. “The results demonstrate the robustness and adaptability of the autonomous functions across platforms,” said Björn Oliver Meyer, head of ADAS/AD customer functions at Cariad.
Embotech said its AVM solution is intended for autonomous vehicle movement in automotive factories and logistics centres, operating both indoors and outdoors alongside human-driven traffic. The system integrates with factory backend software to receive missions and optimise vehicle flow, supporting higher throughput without manual intervention.

The AVM technology received an attestation of conformity from TÜV Süd in June 2024, which Embotech said makes it the only certified solution of its kind globally. The companies said the successful demonstration marks a step toward broader industrial deployment of autonomous vehicle marshalling within production environments.
