Electron, a provider of energy flexibility marketplaces, has agreed to acquire Rhythmos.io, a company specializing in distributed energy resource (DER) detection and grid impact analytics.

The acquisition will integrate Rhythmos’ DER visibility technology with Electron’s flexibility marketplace to enable utilities to expand grid capacity cost-effectively while managing increasing demand from electric vehicles (EVs) and battery systems.

The combined platform is designed to offer utilities granular insight into DER impacts on specific transformers and substations, providing regulatory-grade data to support investment decisions. By optimizing DER deployment, the technology could allow utilities to defer costly infrastructure upgrades and potentially save billions of dollars. According to research cited by the companies, grid-aware optimization of DERs could unlock 10–30% in system-wide savings across the U.S. utility sector.

“With Rhythmos, we’re bridging that gap by bringing grid awareness to flexibility markets, which helps both utilities deploy resources more strategically and DER providers capture more value,” said Jo-Jo Hubbard, CEO of Electron.

Ken Munson, CEO of Rhythmos, added, “By pairing Rhythmos’ grid-edge visibility with Electron’s flexibility marketplace, utilities gain the situational awareness needed to make smarter, data-driven investment decisions. They can now demonstrate, with evidence, when local flexibility is more cost-effective than building new infrastructure—maintaining reliability while keeping power affordable for customers.”

The integration of the two companies’ technologies aims to address challenges posed by the growing number of EVs, battery storage systems, and rooftop solar installations, which make it difficult for utilities to accurately quantify the impact of DERs. Electron, which serves over half of the U.K.’s distribution system operators, plans to leverage Rhythmos’ AI-powered analytics to expand its U.S. operations and enhance flexibility market offerings.
