In July, the Norwegian Road Information Authority OFV recorded 6,148 new registrations of electric cars in Norway, reflecting an increase of 20.1 per cent compared to the same month last year. However, this figure represents a significant decline from the previous month, with less than half as many electric cars registered in June. The seasonal trend of weaker first months of each quarter, coupled with the holiday season, traditionally results in a slowdown in Norway’s import-only market during July.

In terms of all drive types, a total of 7,525 new cars were registered in Norway in July, showing a 3.8 per cent increase compared to July 2022. Notably, electric cars accounted for a substantial share of passenger car registrations, reaching 81.7 per cent with 6,148 new registrations.

Electric vehicles with charging connections, including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), represented 89.8 per cent of all new car registrations in July. However, PHEVs experienced a year-on-year decline of 31.1 per cent in registrations, and year-to-date figures indicate a 26.9 per cent decrease compared to the previous year.

Among the different drive types, full hybrids secured 443 new registrations, still surpassing pure internal combustion vehicles. Petrol vehicles accounted for 1.4 per cent of the market share with 109 new registrations, while diesel vehicles achieved a market share of 2.8 per cent with 211 registrations. Compared to a year ago, both petrol and diesel vehicle market shares have continued to decline, indicating a shift towards electric and hybrid options in Norway.

Regarding the model ranking, the Volkswagen ID.4 topped the charts in July with 975 registrations, followed by the Skoda Enyaq with 691. Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 saw 195 and nine new registrations, respectively, making them prominent outliers with lower numbers for the month. However, the Model Y maintains its position as Norway’s best-selling model for the year, accounting for 15,647 units and holding a 21.1 per cent share of all new cars. The second-ranked VW ID.4 achieved 4,863 new registrations for the year, accounting for 4.2 per cent of the market.

Notable contenders in July included the ID.5 with 216 new registrations, securing the fifth spot ahead of the Ford Mustang Mach-E (213) and the aforementioned Model Y.

Additionally, two other models, the Nissan Ariya and the VW ID. Buzz, shared a similar number of new registrations with 247 each during the month.
