East Yorkshire Buses has finished the initial phase of its electric vehicle infrastructure rollout at its Anlaby Road Depot, ahead of the arrival of 21 new Wrightbus electric buses later this year, the company said on Wednesday. The project, supported by Hull City Council and the Department for Transport, represents the first step toward a zero-emission bus network in the city.

Phase two of the infrastructure programme is already underway, with charging facilities expected to serve both the operator’s new electric fleet and Hull City Council’s passenger vehicle operations. While the city has not specified the type of chargers installed, a press image shows a Zerova charging station with two CCS charging points, capable of delivering 60 to 180 kW. Buses are reported to be charged overnight.

“Step-by-step, we are seeing the revolution of Hull’s public transport,” said Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council. “It was brilliant to see the progress that has been made by East Yorkshire and their contractors to install this new charging infrastructure in anticipation of the arrival of the first electric buses in the city.”

Ben Gilligan, managing director at East Yorkshire Buses, described the development as “a major milestone” for the operator, adding that the electric buses “will massively improve the experience for our staff and customers as well as delivering much improved air quality across the city.”

The initiative forms part of a wider regional electrification effort. An initial £6 million allocation from the Department for Transport enabled the purchase of 40 new electric buses and the installation of supporting infrastructure. In April 2025, the government confirmed an additional £3.9 million to expand the ZEBRA2 project, allowing for the procurement of 42 more electric buses for Hull and the East Riding. Once all 82 vehicles are in service, the majority of Hull’s urban bus network is expected to operate with zero-emission vehicles.
