Florida-based automaker E.C.D. Automotive Design Inc., known for their expertise in restoring and building custom classic Land Rovers, is expanding its horizons with a new addition to their lineup. The company has set its sights on the iconic E-Type, aiming to bring its unique touch to this legendary sports car.
Since its establishment in 2013, E.C.D. Automotive Design Inc. has experienced remarkable growth. Starting out in a modest office building, the company now operates from a state-of-the-art 100,000-square-foot production facility with three assembly lines. With their commitment to in-house craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind vehicle customizations, the Florida automaker currently produces 100 vehicles annually.
According to co-founder Scott Wallace, the success of E.C.D. can be attributed to three core principles: performing all tasks internally, creating individualized vehicle builds, and pursuing projects that ignite their passion. With these principles in mind, the decision to incorporate the E-Type into their repertoire was an easy one.
Wallace revealed that the idea of working on E-Types had been on their minds for years, but it was the move to the new factory that spurred them into action. Adding the E-Type to their portfolio not only diversifies E.C.D.’s offerings but also marks their entry into the realm of sports cars. The company now presents the E-Type in its original coupe and convertible versions, with prices starting at $289,995.
Both iterations of the E-Type will feature enhanced braking, suspension, interior upholstery, and, notably, an upgraded powertrain. E.C.D. provides customers with two primary options: a 450-horsepower LT1 engine or a Tesla powertrain boasting the same power output.
For the Tesla-powered variant, E.C.D. repackages Tesla battery cells and drive units, adapting them to fit the E-Type’s unique proportions. Wallace explained that the E-Type’s spacious bonnet offers ample room for accommodating the battery placements, making the conversion process feasible. He added that the removal of the combustion engine and the presence of an empty fuel tank create additional space for the electric powertrain.
Despite the technological advancements, E.C.D. is committed to preserving the E-Type’s original essence. Wallace emphasized that their aim is to retain the vehicle’s character and classic aesthetics. While E.C.D. has equipped their Defenders with modern conveniences, the approach for the E-Type differs. Clients interested in the E-Type typically prefer to maintain its authentic appearance and charm.
Wallace concluded, “Our intention is always to preserve as much of the car’s original characteristics as possible.”
With its expansion into the world of E-Types, E.C.D. Automotive Design Inc. continues to showcase its passion for automotive craftsmanship and its dedication to delivering unique, custom-built vehicles that capture the essence of automotive history.
