Driventic has introduced the VEDS 2.2, a new integrated electric drive system designed for medium-duty trucks, buses and retrofit applications, as the company expands its portfolio of commercial vehicle electrification solutions.

The new system combines an electric motor, inverter and gearbox into a single compact assembly while remaining compatible with conventional rear axles, allowing manufacturers to simplify the transition from diesel-powered vehicles to battery-electric platforms.

Integrated Design Targets Commercial Vehicle Electrification

The VEDS 2.2 integrates three core components: the EVO 390 high-speed electric motor, a newly developed inverter and a single-stage planetary gearbox.

An electrically driven oil pump with an integrated oil filter provides lubrication and cooling for both the motor and transmission.

According to Driventic, the complete drive unit weighs 275 kilograms, making it lighter and more compact than previous systems while delivering the performance required for commercial vehicle applications.

The company said the new platform builds on the VEDS 1.5, introduced in 2025, which featured an integrated drive inverter system with a diagnosis and management unit, automotive-grade connectors and compliance with ISO 21434 cybersecurity standards.

The latest generation further optimizes torque-to-power performance for heavier vehicle segments.

Compatible With Existing Rear Axles

Driventic said one of the VEDS 2.2’s main advantages is its compatibility with rear axles already used in conventional diesel-powered commercial vehicles.

By retaining existing axle technology, manufacturers can reduce system costs and simplify vehicle integration, making the platform suitable for both new production and retrofit projects.

Vehicle-side interfaces have also been reduced to cooling water connections for the motor, power and signal connections for the inverter, and signal connections for the gearbox. The drive unit connects to the rear axle through a KV180 output flange.

The system requires only a high-voltage battery, a 24-volt battery and a low-temperature cooling circuit with an air-to-water heat exchanger. It also carries an IP6K9K protection rating for operation in demanding commercial vehicle environments.

Senior Vice President of Product Management Manuel Calero said the new platform is intended to support electrification across multiple commercial vehicle segments.

“Our new VEDS 2.2 enables the simple electrification of various vehicle segments, including MD trucks.”

He added that the company aims to broaden its product portfolio for the global commercial vehicle market.

“Because we aim to appeal to the global commercial vehicle market with as broad a portfolio as possible, and to further advance the shift to electric mobility in the entire vehicle fleet.”

Driventic was established as a spin-off from supplier Voith after the company separated its commercial vehicle business from Voith Turbo last year, a move intended to give the business greater operational flexibility and accelerate decision-making as an independent company.
