Daimler Truck North America has marked a significant milestone with the delivery of its inaugural batch of battery-electric Freightliner eM2 trucks to a reputable trucking company based in New York. The series production of these medium-duty electric trucks commenced at the close of 2023 and is poised to make waves in the industry.
PITT OHIO, headquartered in Latham, New York, has emerged as the trailblazer, being the first company to integrate Daimler’s eM2 into its fleet. The company has acquired two Class 7 electric trucks that will be stationed at PITT OHIO’s Cleveland, Ohio, terminal, reinforcing its Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight shipping business.
The Freightliner eM2 is an innovation rooted in the well-established Freightliner M2 106 Plus platform, boasting a proprietary, fully integrated battery electric Detroit ePowertrain. Its revolutionary design places electric motors and a two-speed transmission directly on the drive axles, significantly reducing energy costs per mile. The Class 7 dual-motor variant packs a punch with up to 255 continuous horsepower, fueled by a 291 kWh battery, promising an impressive range of approximately 250 miles on a single charge.
Daimler has equipped its electric delivery box truck with Detroit Connect, a cutting-edge connected vehicle solution that enables real-time monitoring of battery health, charging status, and energy usage. This feature facilitates efficient route planning, energy optimization, and post-trip data analysis, ultimately enhancing overall energy efficiency.
The distribution of the Freightliner eM2 across the United States signifies a pivotal moment in the transportation industry’s shift towards sustainable practices. With Daimler Truck North America leading the charge, the future looks electric for freight transportation.
