Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have formally agreed to establish a 50:50 joint venture aimed at developing a standardized, software-defined vehicle platform, with plans to launch the company in Gothenburg by mid-2025, pending regulatory approval. The joint company will focus on a standardized truck operating system and software development tools to support future commercial vehicles with enhanced digital capabilities.

The joint venture will handle the specification and acquisition of high-performance control units designed to process large volumes of data for commercial vehicles. This platform is intended to allow other vehicle manufacturers to develop their own digital functions, which can be updated wirelessly, thus supporting decoupling of hardware and software development cycles and offering increased flexibility.

Karin Rådström, CEO of Daimler Truck, described the joint venture’s objective as focusing on enhancing safety, comfort, and efficiency in the trucking sector. Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, noted that the platform aims to simplify software architecture to facilitate greater connectivity and performance across the industry.

The companies, also partners in the Milence truck charging venture with Traton, emphasized that they would continue to operate independently in other business areas while working together to establish this platform as an industry standard.
