DAF Trucks Expands its Electric Lineup with the DAF XB Electric Truck Series for Urban and Regional Distribution

DAF Trucks is embracing the electric future with the introduction of the DAF XB Electric truck series, aimed at addressing the demands of urban and regional distribution. The renowned Dutch truck manufacturer is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio to include 12, 16, and 19-tonne variants, offering a range of options for sustainable transportation.

Diversifying Electrified Transport

The new DAF XB Electric series comes equipped with an electric motor delivering either 120 or 190 kW of rated power, depending on the chosen specification. Paired with LFP batteries, these trucks boast a gross energy content ranging from 141 to 282 kWh. While the supplier of the battery cells remains undisclosed, DAF claims the trucks can cover up to 350 kilometers on a single charge, meeting the requirements of inner-city distribution operations.

Efficient Charging Solutions

Charging convenience is a key aspect of the XB Electric series, designed for fast charging using CCS connectors. Reaching from 20 to 80 percent charge, these trucks can utilize high-powered charging stations that offer up to 150 kW peak charging rates, resulting in a charging time of 40 to 70 minutes, depending on battery size. Additionally, DAF intends to support conventional power grid charging, likely employing alternating current (AC). While specific details about maximum AC charging power are yet to be disclosed, DAF emphasizes that a minimum 22 kW AC charging power would be suitable for end-of-day charging routines, taking around 13 hours to charge the 282 kWh battery.

Versatile Design for Varied Applications

The DAF XB Electric series offers flexibility in dimensions, featuring a minimum wheelbase of 4.2 meters. The series also provides an option for a maximum wheelbase of 6.9 meters. However, DAF has not clarified whether this extended wheelbase is exclusive to combustion engine models or also extends to electric variants. Notably, the 7.5-tonne model within the XB series will not be available in an electric configuration.

Potential Collaborative Endeavors

Although the source of the electric motor for the XB Electric series remains undisclosed, industry speculation suggests collaboration between DAF and commercial vehicle manufacturer Paccar. Paccar had previously supplied drive units for DAF’s heavy-duty electric trucks showcased at the IAA Transportation event. Furthermore, Paccar is also known for providing the internal combustion engines featured in the XB series.

Expanding Electric Horizons

DAF is poised to commence production of the new XB series, encompassing both diesel and electric variants, in the fourth quarter of 2023. This introduction marks the fifth addition to DAF’s electric model lineup, joining the ranks of the XD Electric and XF Electric heavy-duty series. DAF’s electric offerings also encompass the CF Electric, a three-axle truck with a capacity of up to 28 tonnes, and the LF Electric – a two-axle, 19-tonne truck with a notable payload capacity of 11,700 kilograms.

As urban logistics and distribution evolve, DAF Trucks’ introduction of the XB Electric series reflects its commitment to providing diverse solutions that align with the changing landscape of sustainable transportation.
