The city of Copenhagen and the enclave of Frederiksberg in Denmark have committed to fully electrifying all five remaining bus routes by 2025. The task of making this change now falls on the public transport operator, Movia. The contracts for these five bus routes are set to end between 2026 and 2029 and were previously expected to continue to be operated with diesel buses.
Copenhagen and Frederiksberg have already made significant progress in their transition to electric buses. Currently, 13 bus routes in the city are already emissions-free, and by December 2023, that number is expected to rise to 22, with 34 routes fully electrified by 2025. The addition of bus routes 12, 21, 33, 37, and 78 in 2025 would bring the total number of electric buses in the cities to 100%.

In 2021, Denmark’s largest cities, including Copenhagen, made the decision to only purchase electric buses. Despite this commitment, it was previously understood that the existing diesel buses would still be in use until the end of their contract terms. The cities now hope to bring this timeline forward with the electrification of the remaining five bus routes.
