Citroen has made a splash at the 2024 Paris Auto Show by introducing the C5 Aircross Concept, which provides a glimpse into the next generation of its popular compact SUV set to debut next year. The C5 Aircross has notably increased in size and showcases a sharper design language, while still emphasizing comfort and practicality.
Built on the STLA Medium platform, the new model is versatile enough to accommodate combustion, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. Citroen describes the C5 Aircross Concept as a “dense, muscular, and organic block, sculpted for aerodynamics.” Its exterior features boxy characteristics reminiscent of the smaller C3 and C3 Aircross, enhanced by design elements aimed at improving aerodynamic efficiency.
Measuring 4.65 meters (183 inches) in length—150 mm (5.9 inches) longer than its predecessor—the family-friendly SUV presents a more substantial presence on the road. While some details of the concept may be toned down for production, such as the ultra-thin LED taillights that protrude like fins and the overall greenhouse design, the foundational aspects are set to remain.
While Citroen has not disclosed specifics about the interior, the automaker assures that it will provide ample space and high comfort levels for five passengers. The concept promises a “wellness area in the spirit of a lounge,” which aims to create a “genuine cocoon on wheels.” Equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and the latest infotainment and connectivity features, the C5 Aircross is designed to offer a modern and comfortable driving experience.
The 2025 C5 Aircross will replace the aging EMP2 architecture with the new STLA Medium platform, which also supports the Peugeot 3008/5008 and the Opel Grandland. Given their shared footprint, the Opel Grandland is expected to be the closest relative to the upcoming C5 Aircross.
Citroen has confirmed that the new compact SUV will be available with gasoline, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. While specifics remain scarce, it is likely that the base model will feature a mild-hybrid turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), a popular choice within the Stellantis group. However, it remains uncertain if a plug-in hybrid version will be offered, as seen in the Peugeot lineups.
The first-ever fully electric e-C5 Aircross is anticipated to feature a choice between 73 kWh and 98 kWh battery packs, potentially offering a maximum range of 700 km (435 miles). Based on the specifications of its mechanically related counterparts, the EV could be available with both single-motor (FWD) and dual-motor (AWD) configurations.
As Citroen phases out the C5 X at the end of its lifecycle, the new C5 Aircross is set to become the brand’s flagship model. More details about the production version will be unveiled as we approach its launch in 2025, marking an exciting evolution for Citroen’s compact SUV lineup.
