German start-up Circunomics has established its first international office in Detroit, marking a key step in its expansion strategy. The Mainz-based company specializes in battery lifecycle management, offering a digital marketplace for first and second-life battery applications, including repurposing automotive batteries for stationary energy storage.

Circunomics sees the U.S. automotive and battery market as a critical growth opportunity, citing an expected surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales beyond 1.3 million units in 2024. Despite the Trump administration’s limited support for EVs, demand for battery recycling and reuse is projected to grow, fueled by restrictions on battery materials sourced from China.

The company’s North American operations will be led by Adam Willmouth, a former Accenture and Oracle executive with experience in global expansion. Circunomics expects its Detroit presence to enhance collaboration with U.S. automakers, battery suppliers, energy storage firms, and recycling companies.

Circunomics’ business model revolves around AI-powered battery health assessments and a digital trading platform for used and surplus battery components. The company’s software generates digital twins to simulate optimal second-life applications, such as energy storage. If a battery is deemed unsuitable for reuse, it is directed to certified recyclers.

CEO Felix Wagner emphasized the global significance of battery lifecycle management, stating, “Our solution addresses a pressing challenge—maximizing battery lifespan while ensuring sustainable disposal practices.” He added that the Detroit office would allow the company to sharpen its focus on the North American market.

The second-life battery sector remains in its early stages in Western markets but has long been established in China, where government-backed industrial policies have promoted e-commerce-driven reuse models. Western efforts, such as the European Battery Pass initiative, aim to strengthen local supply chains and enhance material value retention amid increasing competition from low-cost Chinese batteries.
