Charge Cars, the UK-based electric vehicle (EV) startup known for its bespoke electric muscle car, the ’67, has been revitalized under new ownership.

The company, which emerged in 2016, has experienced its share of challenges, including entering administration in May 2024. However, a consortium of private investors has stepped in, acquiring the company with plans to expedite the development of its flagship model, the ’67, based on the classic 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback.

The ’67, which requires a license from Ford to use its body components, is designed to offer a unique EV experience with modern performance and classic muscle car appeal. Charge Cars originally planned to produce 499 units of the ’67, but nearly a decade later, potential customers have yet to receive their vehicles.

Now under new leadership, including CEO Paul Abercrombie, who took over in November 2024, the company aims to finalize development and deliver the luxury EV to customers from a new global headquarters in Silverstone, UK.

“We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Charge Cars,” Abercrombie stated. “The ’67 establishes a new class of EV, and we will now accelerate final development at our new global HQ in Silverstone, UK, rapidly delivering this exciting luxury vehicle to customers. The Charge brand has huge global potential, and we look forward to revealing more details very soon.”

While specific details about production numbers and timelines remain confidential, the ’67 will retain its original specifications. The electric muscle car features a 63 kWh battery providing up to 200 miles of range, paired with quad motors capable of 400 kW peak power and 1,520 Nm of torque. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and supports DC fast charging at a rate of up to 50 kW.
