CATL announced plans to establish 10,000 battery swap stations, marking a significant step in its expansion into the battery swap sector. This is the first time the company has disclosed specific targets for this business.
Gao Huan, CATL’s Chief Technology Officer, revealed the ambitious goal during the 2024 World Power Battery Conference held yesterday in Yibin, Sichuan province. In the short term, CATL aims to have 3,000 battery swap stations operational by 2027. Additionally, the company plans to expand its network to 30 cities with over 500 stations by 2025, and by 2026, it intends to have more than 1,500 stations across more than 70 cities.
CATL launched its battery swap brand, EVOGO, on January 18, 2022, positioning itself as a key player in the battery swap industry, following in the footsteps of Nio. At the time, Shen Fei, Nio’s vice president for power business, welcomed CATL’s entry into the market, stating that it validated Nio’s unique business model.
As of September 1, Nio operates 2,500 battery swap stations in China, making it the largest network of such facilities in the country. EVOGO’s offering includes Choco-SEB (swapping electric block) battery blocks, which allow vehicles to use one or more blocks depending on their mileage requirements.
CATL’s EVOGO service, which is already available in cities like Xiamen, Fuzhou, Guiyang, and Hefei, aims to create the world’s largest battery swap network within the next two to three years. According to figures shared by EVOGO on Weibo, Xiamen currently leads with the highest number of CATL battery swap stations, totaling 12.
