The Catalan government has announced a comprehensive initiative to invest over 1.4 billion euros in public and private funds to significantly expand electric vehicle (EV) adoption and charging infrastructure by 2030.

The ambitious plan aims to triple the number of electric vehicles in Catalonia and double the number of charging stations, positioning the region as a leader in sustainable mobility.

Key measures under the plan include financial incentives for companies, institutions, and homeowners’ associations to develop charging infrastructure and promote the use of electric vehicles in business fleets.

The government also aims for its own vehicle fleet to be 90% electric within the same time frame. To further support the initiative, a publicity campaign will be launched to raise public awareness of EV technology and its benefits.

Catalonia’s local industry will also benefit from the plan, with a focus on strengthening regional value chains and establishing public-private governance structures to support the transition to electric mobility.

The investment is expected to lead to the registration of approximately 150,000 new EVs, including motorbikes and business fleets, along with the creation of 9,000 new public charging points owned by the Generalitat of Catalonia. This shift is estimated to save 470,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

President of the Catalan government, Salvador Illa, emphasized the region’s commitment to sustainable mobility: “We have the will, we have the talent, we have companies involved and we have a leadership position in the sustainable mobility and automotive sector. Now it’s time to make decisions and adapt with a great degree of self-demand to seize the opportunities and attract future investments in clean technologies and smart mobility.”
