Cabot Establishes Technology Center in Germany to Accelerate Battery Materials Development in Europe

Cabot, a US specialty chemicals company, has announced its plans to establish a technology centre in Münster, Germany. The centre will focus on technical collaboration with customers to accelerate the development of its battery materials products in Europe. Cabot develops solutions for current and future battery technologies such as cathodes with high nickel content, silicon-containing anodes, and solid-state battery materials. These solutions will now also be developed in Münster for the entire EMEA region.

Cabot already has production capacities for conductive carbon additives (CCA) in Europe. Therefore, the EMEA technology centre will support the development of Cabot’s entire CCA product range, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanostructures (CNS), as well as blends and dispersions.

The new laboratory, located close to several leading battery research institutions, local universities, and other technology companies in Europe, will offer a premier site to build a collaboration ecosystem and attract talented scientists and engineers. Cabot aims not only to enhance its battery materials development capability but also to strengthen its technology engagements with other participants in the battery industry through enhanced collaboration and innovation with battery manufacturers, electric vehicle (EV) customers, and partners.

To support these plans, Cabot has joined the European Battery Alliance (EBA), which brings together over 800 companies and institutions along the entire battery value chain. The EBA will offer Cabot a unique platform to engage with stakeholders from industry, government agencies, and academia to help Europe capture and supply the growing battery market.

The Cabot Technology Centre in Münster is scheduled to go into operation in April 2023, with an expansion already planned for 2024. The centre will have advanced testing equipment to provide best-in-class technical application capabilities to serve the battery industry globally. Cabot’s presence in Germany will not only enhance its battery materials development capability but also its technology engagements with other participants in the battery industry. Collaborations are planned to further strengthen the company’s position in the market.
