BYD, a Chinese automobile manufacturer, has recently launched the Yangwang U8, a high-end NEV SUV under its new brand. With a massive size of 5319/2050/1930 mm, the U8 stands on the new E4 platform, supporting both BEVs and PHEVs. Its powertrain comprises four electric motors, each with a power output of 225 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Consequently, the U8 boasts a total power of 1100 horses and a torque of 1280 Nm, making it capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds.
One of the most intriguing features of the U8 is its ability to perform 360-degree tank turns and crab walking due to its four independent motors. Moreover, it can even swim and comes with a high-end suspension system called DiSus. The U8’s range reaches 1000 km (CLTC) and can fast-charge 30-80% in just 18 minutes.
The interior of the U8 looks luxurious, with the center console hosting three screens. The instrument panel has a diameter of 23.6 inches, and the same screen is available for the front passenger. The main monitor has a portrait layout and a diameter of 12.8 inches, and there are two more 12.8-inch screens for the second row. The U8 will be available in seven or five-seat variants.
The U8 is available in two exterior versions, namely the “Premium Edition” and the “Off-road Master Edition.” The former is suitable for urban driving, equipped with 38 sensors, including 3 LiDARs and 16 cameras. The latter is an off-road version with a large roof box and a snorkel.
The U8’s starting price of 1,098,000 RMB (160,000 USD) is significantly higher than previously expected, making it the most expensive Chinese SUV. The first customers will enjoy free road assistance for eight years, a free charging pile, six years or 150,000 km of warranty, and a lifetime powertrain warranty.
