BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao brand is preparing an updated version of its Tai 3 all-electric off-road SUV, with improved powertrain specifications and the option of lidar for more advanced driver assistance, according to documents recently published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The refreshed Fang Cheng Bao Tai 3 retains its existing exterior design and dimensions but introduces notable mechanical upgrades. Buyers will be able to choose between rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants. The rear-wheel-drive version sees its maximum output rise to 240 kW (322 hp) from 160 kW, with acceleration from zero to 100 km/h expected to improve to below 7.9 seconds.
The all-wheel-drive variant combines a 135 kW front motor with a 240 kW rear motor, delivering a total system output of 375 kW (503 hp) and peak torque of 510 Nm. This represents a significant increase over the current configuration, which uses lower-output front and rear motors. Battery capacity and updated range figures have not yet been disclosed. For reference, the current Tai 3 lineup uses BYD’s Blade batteries ranging from 65.28 kWh to 78.72 kWh, offering a CLTC-rated range of up to 501 km.
The MIIT filing also shows that the updated Tai 3 can be equipped with optional lidar, signaling support for a higher tier of BYD’s “God’s Eye” driver assistance system. The existing model relies on an entry-level configuration using millimeter-wave radars, ultrasonic sensors and cameras. The addition of lidar suggests expanded capabilities for advanced driving assistance functions.
Visually, the Tai 3 remains unchanged, measuring 4,605 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,720 mm in height, with a 2,745 mm wheelbase. Design elements such as the closed black front grille, trapezoidal bumpers, vertical rear taillights and externally mounted spare tire are carried over, with customization options including different bumper and roof rack colors.
The update comes as BYD continues to scale its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand. As of Jan. 15, 2026, cumulative sales of Fang Cheng Bao models had surpassed 300,000 units, according to the company, underscoring growing demand for its rugged, electrified SUV offerings.
