BYD has marked a significant milestone with the commencement of production for its personalized sub-brand, Fang Cheng Bao. The inaugural model under this sub-brand, known as the Bao 5 or Leopard 5, has officially rolled off the assembly line, following its pre-sales launch just a month ago.
The development was announced by BYD via Weibo, with the company providing detailed specifications of the Bao 5 but refraining from divulging further information.
The Bao 5 is a robust crossover model, available in three variants, and carries a pre-sale price range of RMB 300,000 ($41,060) to RMB 400,000, as indicated in a poster shared by BYD. It boasts dimensions of 4,890 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, 1,970 mm in height, and a wheelbase measuring 2,800 mm.
Under the hood, the Bao 5 is equipped with dual electric motors. The front motor generates 200 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 285 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque. Additionally, the vehicle features a 1.5L engine with a maximum power output of 143 kW and maximum torque of 273 Nm. Collectively, the powertrain delivers a total power of 505 kW and a total torque of 760 Nm, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.8 seconds.
One of the highlights of the Bao 5 is its blade battery based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry, featuring a pack capacity of 31.8 kWh and a CLTC battery range of 125 km. Impressively, it offers a combined range of 1,200 km when combining a full tank of fuel with a full charge. The Bao 5 also supports DC fast charging, capable of charging from 30 percent to 80 percent in just 16 minutes.
The introduction of the Fang Cheng Bao brand by BYD in August brought forth the DMO technology platform, where “O” stands for off-road and “DM” for dual mode. Prior to this, BYD had its hybrid technology platforms, DM-i and DM-p, emphasizing fuel efficiency and performance, respectively. The company’s electric vehicle platform is known as e-Platform 3.0.
In addition to the Bao 5, Fang Cheng Bao also unveiled the Super 8 concept of the Bao 8 and another model, the Bao 3, during the August 16 event. Subsequently, on August 25, the Bao 5 became available for pre-order at the Chengdu auto show, offering pricing ranging from RMB 300,000 to 400,000.
