BYD has introduced two new hybrid models, the Sealion 05 DM-i and the second-generation Song Pro DM-i, both equipped with the latest DM 5.0 technology and competitively priced to attract consumers. The launch event highlighted the compact SUVs, which have a starting price of RMB 112,800 ($15,980).
Despite differences in design, the two models share nearly identical specifications and pricing. The Sealion 05 DM-i is designed as a compact five-seater SUV, measuring 4,710 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,720 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,712 mm. These dimensions make it slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y, which measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height.
The Sealion 05 DM-i is the second model in BYD’s Sealion series, following the Sealion 07 EV, and marks the introduction of the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in this series. BYD is offering four variants of the Sealion 05 DM-i at prices of RMB 112,800, RMB 122,800, RMB 132,800, and RMB 142,800. It features BYD’s fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid technology, powered by a 1.5L engine generating a maximum power of 74 kW, paired with a front-mounted electric motor capable of producing 120 kW and 210 Nm of peak torque. The model can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in approximately 8.3 to 8.5 seconds.
The battery options for the Sealion 05 DM-i include capacities of 12.9 kWh and 18.3 kWh, providing a CLTC electric range of 75 km and 115 km, respectively. When fully fueled and charged, the vehicle boasts a combined range of 1,360 km to 1,400 km, depending on the variant.
The second-generation Song Pro DM-i offers four variants with starting prices identical to the Sealion 05 DM-i. However, it has one less variant than its predecessor, which previously included five options. The starting price of the new Song Pro DM-i has increased by RMB 3,000, or 2.7%, compared to the Song Pro DM-i Glory Edition launched earlier this year.
Measuring 4,735 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height, the second-generation Song Pro DM-i is slightly shorter than its predecessor. It also utilizes the DM 5.0 system, featuring a 1.5L engine and similar power output to the Sealion 05 DM-i. The Song Pro DM-i can also accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.3 to 8.5 seconds and offers the same battery options and fuel consumption rates as the Sealion 05 DM-i.
