Chinese automaker BYD has introduced its compact electric SUV, the Atto 2, at the Brussels Motor Show, positioning it as an “affordable SUV” tailored for the European market. Sales are slated to begin in March 2025, with pricing details expected to be announced soon.

The Atto 2, measuring 4.31 meters in length, 1.83 meters in width, and 1.68 meters in height, is smaller than its sibling, the Atto 3. Based on BYDā€™s e-Platform 3.0, the vehicle incorporates advanced cell-to-body (CTB) technology, which integrates the battery into the chassis for enhanced interior space and body rigidity. Initially, it will feature a 45.1 kWh battery pack, delivering an estimated WLTP range of 312 kilometers. BYD plans to introduce a version with a larger battery later in 2025.

BYD aims to capture market share in Europeā€™s compact SUV sector, leveraging its strengths in battery and motor technology. The Atto 2ā€™s blade battery uses LFP chemistry, known for durability and safety. While its initial range and battery capacity place it in competition with models like Volkswagenā€™s ID.3 and Kiaā€™s EV3, BYD has yet to confirm if larger battery options will be offered, as seen in some competitors.

The Atto 2 features a practical yet conventional design, with LED lighting elements and design cues inspired by traditional Chinese motifs. While the model will be imported from China at launch, BYD plans to commence local production at its European facility in Hungary by late 2025.

BYD views the Atto 2 as a cornerstone of its European growth strategy. ā€œThe small car segment is incredibly popular here, and with the Atto 2 we have a maneuverable and versatile vehicle that will appeal to this large potential customer base,ā€ said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD. The automaker intends to build on its existing success in Europe, emphasizing affordability, smart technologies, and sustainable design.
