BYD has launched its new electric compact SUV, the Atto 2, in France with a starting price of €28,990 ($30,358), making it the company’s most affordable SUV in the region, a senior company executive said. The vehicle was presented on Tuesday at Paris’ La Défense Arena.

The Atto 2 enters the competitive European B-segment SUV market with pricing significantly below key rivals. It is €5,000 cheaper than the Kia Niro, €6,000 less than the Opel Mokka-e, and €7,000 below the Peugeot e-2008.

However, the latter two models from Stellantis qualify for French incentives of up to €4,000. The Citroën e-C3, also from Stellantis, remains around €6,000 cheaper than the Atto 2 before subsidies.

At 4.31 meters long, 1.83 meters wide, and 1.68 meters high, the Atto 2 is more compact than its sibling, the Atto 3. Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, it features cell-to-body (CTB) technology, integrating the battery into the chassis for improved space efficiency and rigidity.

The initial variant comes with a 45.1 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of 312 kilometers, with a larger-battery version expected in 2025.

The Atto 2 features a practical design with LED lighting and styling cues influenced by traditional Chinese aesthetics. Initially imported from China, BYD plans to begin European production at its Hungary facility by late 2025.
