BYD has unveiled a preview of a new model targeting Japan’s popular K-Car segment, signaling the company’s next phase of expansion in the Japanese market. The vehicle was featured on BYD Japan’s website ahead of its official debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, which begins on October 30.
The image reveals a compact, urban-oriented vehicle consistent with the proportions of Japan’s K-Cars—mini cars that are typically less than 3.4 meters long, 1.48 meters wide, and limited to 64 horsepower. Favored for their affordability and maneuverability, K-Cars benefit from reduced taxes and are widely used as second vehicles among urban households.

Reports from local media indicate that BYD’s upcoming model may feature a 20-kWh battery pack, offering an estimated WLTC range of around 180 kilometers. The model is expected to be a fully electric K-Car designed specifically for the Japanese market, with a launch anticipated in the second half of 2026.
BYD entered Japan’s passenger vehicle market in early 2023 with the Atto 3 electric SUV, following its official announcement in mid-2022. Since then, the company has steadily increased its presence, recording 416 new vehicle registrations in May—its first appearance among Japan’s top 10 imported car brands. In August, BYD announced that cumulative sales of its passenger vehicles in Japan had surpassed 5,000 units.

The introduction of an electric K-Car would allow BYD to compete directly with established domestic manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. With models like the Nissan Sakura already popular in the segment, BYD’s upcoming entry is expected to strengthen its position in Japan’s growing compact electric vehicle market while expanding consumer options in the country’s urban mobility landscape.
