The BYD Shark has received a five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), according to an assessment published on October 12, 2026.

The five-door, four-wheel-drive pickup was evaluated under Euro NCAP’s 2025 testing protocols. The assessment covers four main categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection and safety assist systems.

The BYD Shark recorded scores of 82% for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection, 74% for vulnerable road user protection and 87% for safety assist systems.

Crash Test Results

In crash testing, the BYD Shark scored 10.9 out of 16 points in frontal impact assessments, 15 out of 16 points in lateral impact tests and four out of four points in rear-impact testing.

Euro NCAP reported that the passenger compartment remained stable during the frontal offset test. Protection for the knees and femurs of the driver and front passenger was rated as good. However, the full-width frontal test identified a progressive impact penalty for the driver, while passenger protection was rated as adequate.

The side barrier assessment showed good protection across the body regions evaluated, although the report identified a risk of chest injuries for the driver. Euro NCAP also assessed the vehicle’s measures to reduce injuries caused by occupants striking one another during side impacts.

The pickup is equipped with airbags, an advanced eCall system and multi-collision braking.

Child Occupant Protection

The BYD Shark scored 24 out of 24 points in child crash-test performance, covering frontal and lateral impact scenarios involving six- and ten-year-old child dummies.

The vehicle received 10.3 out of 12 points in the child seat installation assessment, which examined ISOFIX and i-Size compatibility and seatbelt attachment.

The report also identified limitations in the availability of certain child safety features across seating positions, including top-tether provisions and integrated child restraints. The overall child occupant protection score was 86%.

Vulnerable Road User Protection

The pickup scored 74% in vulnerable road user protection, including 23.3 out of 36 points in the assessment of protection for pedestrians and cyclists. Its vulnerable road user impact mitigation systems received 23.9 out of 27 points.

The BYD Shark features autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with forward collision warning. The system operates from 4 km/h and uses camera and radar sensors.

In the AEB assessment, the vehicle scored 6.7 out of nine points for pedestrian scenarios, 7.9 out of eight points for cyclist scenarios and six out of six points for motorcyclist scenarios. The report also evaluated cyclist dooring prevention, which provides a warning when a side door is opened into the path of a passing cyclist.

Safety Assist Systems

The BYD Shark received a score of 87% for safety assist systems, including 11.5 out of 13 points for safety assistance features.

The vehicle’s equipment includes traffic sign recognition, intelligent adaptive cruise control, lane departure assistance and emergency lane-keeping assistance. The lane support systems operate from 50 km/h.

Euro NCAP also evaluated the vehicle’s seatbelt reminders, occupant status monitoring and driver monitoring system. The latter uses direct eye monitoring and operates from 10 km/h.

The pickup scored three out of three points for occupant status monitoring and two out of two points for driver monitoring.

Rating Details

The five-star rating applies to the tested BYD Shark Design variant with four-wheel drive and is listed as valid for both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive vehicles.

The Euro NCAP assessment provides results across crash protection, child restraint installation, vulnerable road user protection and driver assistance systems. The report also identifies areas where the vehicle’s performance was rated as adequate or where certain safety features were not available across all seating positions.
