At the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, BYD underscored its continued commitment to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, emphasizing safety and reliability as key priorities for the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market, according to IT-home.
Li Yunfei, General Manager of Brand and Public Relations at BYD, highlighted that China leads global EV battery growth with abundant resources, extensive research capabilities, and a robust industrial base.

While acknowledging the potential of solid-state batteries, he noted that current LFP and ternary lithium technologies are well-established and supported by comprehensive charging infrastructure. Li emphasized the safety of LFP batteries, stating: “Safety is fundamental. Safety is the greatest luxury. Safety is a basic product goal.”
Li pointed to China’s electrified public bus fleet as evidence of LFP battery reliability, noting that widespread adoption over the past 15 years has prevented serious fire incidents despite high passenger loads. He added that LFP batteries now account for more than 80% of the Chinese EV market, with installations reaching 493.9 GWh from January to September 2025, a 42.5% year-on-year increase.

Highlighting technical advantages, Li said LFP batteries typically sustain capacity over 3,500 charge-discharge cycles and offer higher thermal stability, with thermal runaway temperatures exceeding 500°C, compared with ternary lithium batteries at around 2,000 cycles and under 300°C. He acknowledged that some brands continue to use ternary lithium to achieve longer ranges but encouraged the industry to maintain safety as a baseline standard. “As a key participant in this sector, we hope all players contribute positively and prioritise safety as the baseline,” Li added.
BYD’s reaffirmation of LFP batteries signals the company’s strategy to balance performance, longevity, and consumer safety, reinforcing its position in the rapidly expanding Chinese EV market.
