BYD has previewed the new 8-series Tang, an all-electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) that will expand the company’s Tang family with a claimed driving range of more than 800 kilometers.
Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty lineup, shared the first exterior images of the model on Chinese social media, describing it as a mid-to-large-size SUV designed for families seeking a spacious five-seat vehicle.
The new model will join the recently launched 9-series Da Tang EV, a full-size seven-seat electric SUV positioned for larger families and business users.
New Addition to the Tang Family
According to Lu, the 8-series Tang and the 9-series Da Tang will serve as the flagship models within BYD’s Dynasty lineup.
The 8-series Tang appeared earlier this month in the latest batch of new vehicle filings released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), with an official launch expected in the second half of the year.
Regulatory documents show the SUV measures 5,045 millimeters in length and 1,980 millimeters in width, with a wheelbase of 2,950 millimeters. It will be offered in both five-seat and seven-seat battery-electric configurations.
Battery and Performance
The vehicle is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor producing a maximum output of 300 kilowatts (402 horsepower), with a listed top speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
The SUV uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.
BYD said the model will offer an all-electric driving range exceeding 800 kilometers, although it has not disclosed the testing cycle or battery capacity.
The company has also not released details of its charging specifications. However, the use of the second-generation Blade Battery and the announced driving range indicate the model could adopt an electrical architecture exceeding 800 volts and support BYD’s flash-charging technology.
For comparison, the recently launched 9-series Da Tang EV is equipped with the same generation of Blade Battery and supports charging from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes under compatible charging conditions.
