BYD has launched the Sealion 5 DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV in the United Kingdom, pricing the mid-size family model from £29,995, as it continues to expand its presence in the European market.

The Sealion 5 DM-i becomes BYD’s ninth model available in the UK and is positioned against similarly sized internal combustion engine SUVs. Orders are now open, with retail availability beginning on Feb. 7, 2025, the company said.

The model uses BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i technology, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a total system output of 212PS. BYD said the petrol engine operates with a thermal efficiency of up to 43%.

Two trims are offered. The entry-level Comfort version, priced at £29,995, is equipped with a 12.96 kWh battery and offers more than 38 miles of electric-only range. The higher-spec Design trim, priced at £32,995, features an 18.3 kWh battery and delivers up to 53.4 miles of electric range, according to official figures. BYD said the total combined driving range for the model can reach up to 631 miles.

Both versions support charging via a 3.3 kW onboard charger and include vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing the car to power external electrical devices.

Standard equipment across the range includes a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Interior features include vegan leather upholstery and electrically adjustable front seats.

The Design trim adds features such as a 360-degree camera system, front parking sensors, heated front seats, wireless smartphone charging and an electric tailgate.

“The Sealion 5 DM-i represents our most accessible entry point into BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology in the UK,” said Steve Beattie. He added that the company expects the model to become one of BYD’s top-selling vehicles in the British market.
