BYD has launched its most affordable electric vehicle to date in the United Kingdom, as the Chinese automaker ramps up efforts to gain a stronger foothold in European markets. The new model, called the Dolphin Surf, is priced from £18,650 and is positioned as a city-focused hatchback with features that exceed typical expectations in the budget EV segment.
The Dolphin Surf is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery offering up to 137 miles of range under WLTP testing. In optimal conditions, it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. While its range may not match that of long-haul models, the car incorporates features generally reserved for more expensive vehicles — including a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen, intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality.
Analysts have noted that BYD’s pricing strategy could intensify competition in the UK’s entry-level EV market. The company already offers a near-identical version of the car, known as the Seagull, in China for the equivalent of roughly £6,000, raising speculation about future pricing adjustments.
The UK has become a favored destination for Chinese EV manufacturers amid regulatory shifts across Europe. While the European Union has imposed a 17.4 percent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, the UK has not implemented similar measures, making it an attractive entry point for brands like BYD, Xpeng, and Geely. Recent data shows British consumers account for 30 percent of all Chinese EV purchases in Europe.
The Dolphin Surf enters a competitive segment alongside other budget models such as the Dacia Spring (£14,995) and Citroën e-C3 (£18,305). BYD currently also offers models like the Sealion 7, ATTO 3, and Seal in the UK, as it aims to broaden its portfolio and appeal to a range of consumers.
