BYD Introduces the Seal U: A New All-Electric SUV for International Markets

In a move that highlights BYD’s penchant for creative naming strategies, the Chinese automaker has announced the Seal U as its latest offering for international markets. Formerly known as the Song Plus Champion Edition, the all-electric SUV joins the Ocean series lineup, featuring marine-themed names like Dolphin, Seal, and Destroyer.

The Seal U comes with an assortment of striking design features, including a closed grille, sharp triangular headlights, and a sleek sloping bonnet line, culminating in a distinctive singular tail light unit. The captivating model is showcased in Azure Blue, setting it apart from its domestic counterpart’s Gray-Blue color scheme. With dimensions measuring 4,785 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,660 mm in height, the Seal U boasts a wheelbase of 2,765 mm, ensuring ample space for passengers and cargo.

Under the hood, the Seal U will ride on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 and offer customers a choice of two powertrain options. The first features a 71 kWh LFP battery, providing a generous 520 km range and powering a 204 hp electric motor.

For those seeking greater range and power, the second option is equipped with an 87 kWh LFP battery pack, delivering an impressive 605 km range and paired with a 218 hp electric motor. Additionally, the SUV will come equipped with the DiLink system and two-zone climate control for enhanced convenience and comfort.

The Seal U’s international version will present a mature, all-black interior, differing from the domestic model’s Gray-Blue scheme. BYD is set to introduce the SUV at the Munich Motor Show this September, with the first units expected to hit the international market in late 2023 or early 2024.
