BYD has introduced its Dual Mode (DM) hybrid technology in Indonesia, marking the company’s expansion beyond battery-electric vehicles in Southeast Asia’s largest automotive market.
The company unveiled the technology during an event held in Jakarta on May 18, according to a statement released on Thursday.
BYD said the move reflects its strategy of offering both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to address differing market conditions and consumer needs globally, including in Indonesia.
The first model equipped with the company’s DM technology in Indonesia is the BYD M6 DM, a multi-purpose vehicle that is not currently sold in China.
The automaker said the introduction of hybrid technology broadens its mobility offerings in Indonesia by providing an alternative for consumers seeking both urban driving capability and extended long-distance range.
BYD launched its fifth-generation DM hybrid technology in China in May 2024.
According to the company, vehicles equipped with the system can achieve fuel consumption as low as 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers under low battery conditions, while combined range can reach up to 2,100 kilometers with a fully charged battery and full fuel tank.
Indonesia has emerged as an increasingly important market for electric and hybrid vehicles as government support and infrastructure development continue to accelerate vehicle electrification.
BYD said Indonesia’s EV penetration rate has risen from below 1% in 2022 to around 20% in the first quarter of 2026.
The company added that Indonesia’s large geographic area and still-developing charging infrastructure make hybrid vehicles particularly suitable for the local market.
BYD officially entered Indonesia’s passenger vehicle market in January 2024 and said approximately 90,000 BYD new energy vehicles are currently operating in the country.
Prior to introducing DM technology, the company had already launched six battery-electric vehicle models in Indonesia.
