China’s new energy vehicle maker BYD has formally entered the Iraqi automotive market, holding a brand launch event in Baghdad on Dec. 24 to mark its official debut, the company said in a statement.

The launch comes despite several BYD models already being available in Iraq through earlier channels. At the event, the automaker introduced the Shark 6, a hybrid pickup known as the Shark in several overseas markets. The model is not sold in China’s domestic market.

Before the official launch, BYD said it had already offered seven models in Iraq, comprising three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and four battery-electric vehicles, reflecting growing local availability ahead of its formal market entry.

“The official entry into Iraq represents a crucial step in BYD’s regional strategic layout,” said Huang Zhixue, general manager of BYD’s Middle East and Africa automotive sales division.

BYD said it plans to establish a comprehensive vehicle usage and ownership ecosystem in Iraq, with after-sales service centres expected to open in the near term. The company added that it aims to strengthen customer support as it expands its presence in the country.

Ahead of the brand launch, BYD opened its first showroom in Iraq, which attracted more than 2,000 visitors on its opening day, according to the company.

The Shark pickup was first launched in Mexico in May 2024 and has since been introduced in several other markets, including Brazil, Australia, Cambodia, Chile and Pakistan.
