China’s BYD is set to launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in Japan later this year as part of an effort to expand its presence in the country.
The Shenzhen-based automaker aims to grow its product lineup in Japan to seven or eight models by 2027, including both fully electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids.

In addition to the upcoming plug-in hybrid, BYD will begin selling the Sealion 7 crossover, its fourth fully electric vehicle, in Japan starting in April. The company is focused on broadening its offerings and increasing its dealer network within the Japanese market.
The new plug-in hybrid will combine a traditional fuel engine with a battery, allowing customers to switch between the two power sources.
BYD is a key player in plug-in hybrid technology in China and is expected to release further details about the model once it completes the required certification process in Japan.

BYD’s sales in Japan have been steadily growing, with the company selling over 2,200 vehicles in 2024, reflecting a 50% increase from the previous year. The company’s strategic move aims to cater to growing demand for both electric and hybrid vehicles in the region.
