BYD, the Chinese automaker, is making waves in the electric car market as it continues to double its plug-in electric car sales globally. In April, the company reported a significant increase in sales, which brought it closer to breaking its all-time monthly record. The majority of BYD’s sales are in China, with only a few percent exported. Although the company had an excellent sales performance in March, it did have to offer discounts on some of its models, such as the Seal, Song Plus, Yuan Plus, and Dolphin, in the past two months. Interestingly, BYD had initially stated that it would not follow Tesla’s price reductions.

One intriguing aspect of BYD’s sales is that both all-electric and plug-in hybrid sales have grown at similar year-over-year rates. The PHEV segment, however, remains slightly more extensive and quicker growing. Last month, BYD sold 210,295 plug-in electric vehicles, including 828 commercial electric vehicles, with 14,827 of them being exported.

This year alone, BYD has already sold more than 757,000 passenger plug-in electric cars, representing a 94 percent increase from last year. In terms of models, the BYD Qin family (BEV + PHEV) was the top-selling one for two consecutive months, with 42,202 units sold, thanks to a new plug-in hybrid version that was launched earlier this year. The all-electric BYD Yuan sold 39,160 units, while the BYD Song family (BEV + PHEV) came in third with 35,836 units. The all-electric BYD Dolphin also had a significant number of sales with 30,462 units.

Moreover, BYD has just released two new plug-in models, the all-new all-electric microcar named Seagull, which had 1,500 units sold, and the all-new plug-in hybrid BYD Chaser 07, which sold 5,380 units. The ultra-affordable BYD Seagull, priced at $11,400, may become one of the top-selling BEVs globally if it takes off.

Overall, BYD’s 12-month sales have exceeded 2.2 million units, and the company aims to sell more than 3 million units in 2023. With its consistent growth and innovative new models, BYD is establishing itself as a significant player in the global electric car market.
