BYD, known for its affordable electric vehicles, is venturing into the luxury market with its first electric supercar, the Yangwang U9. Production of the U9 has commenced, with deliveries expected to start later this summer.

Launched in January 2023 as part of BYD’s new premium brand, Yangwang, the U9 was unveiled alongside the U8 SUV, a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The U9, which has been showcased with various features and capabilities, officially launched in February with a starting price of $233,000 (1.68 million yuan).

The Yangwang U9 boasts four advanced electric motors generating nearly 1,300 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 2.36 seconds. This performance is on par with luxury supercars such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and the Bugatti Chiron.

With dimensions of 4,966 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width, and 1,295 mm in height, the U9 is similar in size to the Lamborghini Aventador. The interior features BYD’s latest software and connectivity technology, including the DiLink and DiPilot systems. The supercar is equipped with two LCD screens, a 10.25-inch driver display, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and an optional 10.25-inch passenger screen.

Powered by an 80 kWh battery, the U9 offers a range of up to 280 miles (450 km) on the CLTC cycle and can fast charge from 30% to 80% in just 10 minutes.

Buyers can track the estimated arrival time of their vehicle through the Yangwang app. If deliveries are delayed, BYD will compensate with 2,000 credits or the equivalent of 200 yuan ($27.50) per day. Additionally, BYD has updated the warranty to cover the vehicle’s battery, motors, and electric control system for the lifetime of the vehicle. Customers who place a deposit by July 31, 2024, will receive a free TPU paint protection film.
