BTC Power, a major electric vehicle (EV) charger manufacturer, has announced its plan to incorporate Tesla’s charging standard into its products starting next year. This decision comes shortly after industry giants Ford and General Motors also embraced Tesla’s technology, causing ripples in the EV sector. BTC joins other notable charger makers, including ABB E-mobility North America, Tritium DCFC, and SK Signet, in adopting Tesla’s standard.
The establishment of a nationwide EV charging network is crucial in alleviating concerns about driving range and enticing customers to switch from traditional combustion engine vehicles. BTC’s move not only reinforces Tesla’s drive to dominate the rapidly growing EV industry but also provides a substantial boost to the company’s overarching vision.
Frank Meza, CEO of BTC, highlighted the advantages of incorporating the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector into their chargers. This integration eliminates the need for unreliable adapters that many drivers currently rely on when using BTC equipment. By streamlining the charging process, BTC aims to enhance convenience and reliability for EV owners.
Based in Santa Ana, California, BTC has already sold over 22,000 chargers, with more than half of them being high-speed models. Their clients range from charge point operators and fleets to prominent retailers such as Electrify America, Ford, and Amazon.com. In addition to BTC, it was recently reported that electric pickup manufacturer Rivian would also adopt Tesla’s charging standard, further strengthening Elon Musk’s push to challenge the dominant Combined Charging System (CCS) favored by the Biden administration.
The White House, which is actively promoting the deployment of hundreds of thousands of chargers, announced that federal subsidies would be available for EV charging stations with Tesla plugs, as long as they offer CCS connectivity. This backing from the government, combined with the support of Detroit automakers and charger manufacturers like EVgo and Chargepoint, who have swiftly incorporated NACS into their systems, underscores Tesla’s influence in the EV charging landscape.
