Bosch eBike Systems said it is introducing a new digital theft-protection feature that allows owners to mark electric bicycles and batteries as stolen via an app, expanding security measures as e-bike theft remains a concern in major urban markets.

The German technology supplier unveiled the update during CES 2026, saying the feature will be available from the end of January at no cost to users. Once an e-bike or battery is reported stolen, it is digitally flagged across the entire Bosch eBike Systems ecosystem, making it visible to potential buyers, dealers, workshops and authorities when they attempt to connect to the vehicle using Bosch software.

“Stolen e-bikes can thus be permanently identified within the digital ecosystem of Bosch eBike Systems,” the company said, adding that the measure is designed to make resale significantly more difficult and improve recovery prospects.

Bosch said the system relies on a digital assignment principle in which key components — including the motor, battery and display — are uniquely registered to a user profile. When an item is marked as stolen, the information is stored centrally and can only be removed by the registered owner.

The company said stolen e-bikes will also lose access to over-the-air software updates and riding-mode adjustments. Dealers connecting such bikes for servicing will receive a warning through Bosch’s diagnostic software, according to the company.

The new functionality builds on Bosch’s existing theft-prevention tools, including eBike Lock, eBike Alarm and Battery Lock, which have been rolled out since 2018.

Bosch also said it is expanding digital controls for commercial customers such as fleet operators, rental services and bike-sharing providers. These users will be able to remotely deactivate motor assistance for unreturned bikes and access operational data through a cloud interface, including battery status, range forecasts, service intervals and — where enabled — GPS location.
