BMW has introduced refreshed versions of its X5 and X6 SUVs, which are set to be launched globally in April 2023. The new models come with updated drive systems, including the X5’s plug-in hybrid variant, which has been given a new designation as the X5 xDrive50e. The X6, on the other hand, will not be offered as a plug-in hybrid.
The X5 xDrive50e boasts an improved drive system, which combines a six-cylinder combustion engine with a new electric machine. The new setup delivers 145 kW of output, an increase of 62 kW compared to its predecessor.
BMW claims that an innovative pre-ratio technology that enhances the engine-side transmission input torque to up to 450 Nm will result in a more spontaneous power delivery. The petrol engine, too, has been upgraded, with an increase of 20 kW to 230 kW. The system output of the plug-in hybrid now stands at 360 kW, a 70 kW boost from before.

The battery of the X5 xDrive50e has also received an upgrade, with the usable energy content rising by almost 25% to 25.7 kWh. According to the WLTP, the electric range of the new model ranges from 94 to 110 kilometres. The charging power has been doubled thanks to a new Combined Charging Unit, although it remains at 7.4 kW. Unfortunately, BMW has not included AC charging at 11 kW or DC charging, which is available in rival models such as the recently updated Mercedes GLE plug-in hybrid.
Other engine options in the X5 and X6 SUVs are also electrified, with six-cylinder diesel, six-cylinder petrol, and V8 engines all utilizing a 48-volt hybrid system, providing an additional 9 kW of drive power.
In terms of design, the X5 has been updated with a more modern look, adopting some elements from the larger X7, including a larger kidney grille and flatter headlights. The X6, however, will not be offered as a plug-in hybrid, as BMW already has the similarly sized XM Hybrid under its M range. Prices for the X5 xDrive50e have not been disclosed by BMW.
