As the new year unfolds, BMW gears up for a series of noteworthy updates, set to enrich its vehicle lineup in 2024. Among the key unveilings are the introduction of fresh models within the i5 and 5-Series categories, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to innovation and electrification.
Leading the charge is the i5 xDrive40, a poised addition to the i5 lineup scheduled for production commencement in March. Striking a balance between performance and efficiency, this variant boasts a dual-motor configuration strategically positioned at the front and rear axles. The combined power output reaches an impressive 389 horsepower, accompanied by a robust 435 lb-ft of torque.
Acceleration enthusiasts will appreciate the i5 xDrive40’s capability to achieve 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, showcasing an improvement over its single-motor counterpart. Although the specific range remains undisclosed, BMW highlights the model’s reliance on an 84.3 kWh battery pack, equipped for rapid charging at speeds of up to 205 kW at DC fast-charging stations. This enables an efficient charge time, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent state of charge in a mere 30 minutes.
The automaker emphasizes the i5 xDrive40’s commitment to eco-conscious driving, providing a compelling option for those seeking both performance and sustainability. With production slated to begin in March, BMW has set a starting price of $71,090, inclusive of a $995 destination charge.
Looking further ahead into the year, BMW has plans to introduce the plug-in hybrid variant of the new 5-Series, the 550e xDrive PHEV. This model will feature a powertrain centered around a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, coupled with an electric motor seamlessly integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The collaborative effort of these components results in a total power output of 483 horsepower and an impressive 516 lb-ft of torque.
Performance enthusiasts can anticipate the 550e xDrive PHEV’s rapid acceleration, reaching 60 mph in a mere 4.0 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. The model is projected to achieve an electric-only range of around 30 miles, reinforcing BMW’s commitment to advancing electric mobility. As the production launch approaches in July, BMW promises to unveil additional details, including pricing, a more precise range estimate, and other pertinent information. The 550e xDrive PHEV embodies BMW’s dedication to delivering a harmonious blend of power, efficiency, and eco-friendly driving experiences.
