BMW is reportedly developing a fully electric i4 Cabrio based on its Neue Klasse platform, expanding its battery-electric lineup with a convertible model expected to arrive in 2028.
According to BMW Blog, the new model, internally codenamed NA3, will replace the outgoing i4 Gran Coupé as part of the automaker’s next-generation electric vehicle strategy. The convertible is expected to feature four seats and a traditional fabric soft top while benefiting from the dedicated electric architecture introduced with BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.

Neue Klasse Platform to Support Electric Convertible
Unlike the current i4, which is built on BMW’s mixed-architecture CLAR platform, the i4 Cabrio is expected to be developed from the ground up as a battery-electric vehicle.
The dedicated platform allows designers greater flexibility by eliminating the packaging constraints associated with internal combustion engines. According to the report, the vehicle will feature shorter overhangs and a longer wheelbase, improving cabin space and passenger comfort while maintaining compact exterior dimensions.
The exterior is expected to adopt BMW’s latest Neue Klasse styling cues, including a closed front fascia, aerodynamic wheels and a cleaner overall design.
Early spy photographs indicate that development is progressing, with prototypes already fitted with production-ready body panels. Temporary headlight and taillight units remain in use, although the final lighting signature is expected to mirror that of the new BMW i3 sedan.
Images also show red brake calipers, suggesting that BMW is testing a sport-oriented variant that could include an M Sport package.
Production Expected Alongside Combustion Model
BMW is reportedly planning to sell the battery-electric i4 Cabrio alongside the current 4 Series Cabrio rather than replacing it immediately.
According to BMW Blog, production of the gasoline-powered 4 Series Cabrio (G23) at the Dingolfing plant is expected to continue until the middle of 2029, allowing both models to coexist for a period.

Inside, the electric convertible is expected to adopt the minimalist Neue Klasse cabin, replacing many traditional physical controls with a simplified digital interface. The familiar iDrive rotary controller is expected to be omitted in favor of BMW’s latest operating concept already introduced on other Neue Klasse models.
The report also suggests the i4 Cabrio will closely share its technical foundation with the new BMW i3 sedan and the recently announced i3 Touring, despite carrying the i4 name.
BMW has not confirmed plans for the model or whether a dedicated high-performance M version will be offered. However, the company is expected to reveal more details as development progresses toward the reported 2028 launch.
