BMW Group has reached an important milestone in the construction of its new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Irlbach-Strasskirchen, Bavaria, with the installation of all 1,066 pillars. The plant will produce sixth-generation batteries for BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle models, supporting the company’s ongoing expansion in e-mobility. Construction remains on schedule despite challenging weather, with production expected to begin in 2026.

Once operational, the plant is set to create approximately 1,600 jobs and will supply batteries to BMW’s vehicle production facilities in Munich, Regensburg, and Dingolfing. The new plant forms part of BMW’s broader efforts to strengthen its e-mobility production and contribute to employment in the region.

Construction has progressed quickly since work began in June 2024. In addition to completing the pillars, the team has installed prefabricated components such as walls, stairwells, and roof structures. Work is currently focused on installing facade elements, with the main production building expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Interior construction and system installations will continue throughout 2025.

BMW has highlighted the use of digital planning and collaboration in ensuring smooth construction progress. According to Silvia Meyer, Head of High-Voltage Battery Real Estate Management, digital tools have facilitated coordination across multiple locations, helping the team anticipate potential challenges and maintain the project’s timeline.

In addition to the main production facility, work is also underway on several auxiliary buildings, including a non-series material warehouse, energy center, and disposal center. Construction on these supporting structures began in mid-2024 and is expected to continue through 2025.

The plant is expected to be fully operational by 2026, with the production of sixth-generation high-voltage batteries playing a key role in BMW’s future electric vehicle strategy. The facility will provide essential components to support the company’s growing electric vehicle production capacity in Germany.
