Swedish public transport operator Bergkvarabuss has ordered 47 Volvo 8900 Electric buses from Volvo Buses for use on regional transport routes in Skåne and urban services in Helsingborg.

The new buses will support commuter and city transport operations across southern Sweden as Bergkvarabuss continues expanding its zero-emission fleet.

Bergkvarabuss previously invested in battery-electric buses through orders from BYD and Daimler Buses. In 2021, the company ordered 79 electric buses from BYD, while in 2019 it introduced five Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses into operation in Kalmar.

The operator currently manages a fleet of around 1,350 buses across several Swedish regions.

Martin Spjern, country manager Sweden at Volvo Buses, said the order reflects Bergkvarabuss’ focus on operational efficiency and sustainable transport.

“We are truly happy about the confidence from Bergkvara, a major operator with strict requirements on product reliability as well as total cost of ownership,” Spjern said.

“I’m also looking forward to a continued collaboration with Bergkvara as we both strive for a more sustainable society through zero-emission people transport solutions,” he added.

Volvo Buses introduced the Volvo 8900 Electric model in 2024 as a battery-electric low-entry bus designed for urban, intercity and commuter transport.

The vehicle is built on Volvo’s BZR Electric platform and is available in 12.3-metre and 14.9-metre versions. The buses can be equipped with between four and six battery packs, each rated at 90 kilowatt-hours, for a maximum energy capacity of 540 kilowatt-hours.

Volvo offers the platform with either a 200-kilowatt single-motor powertrain or a 400-kilowatt dual-motor configuration.

While Volvo supplies the chassis and electric drivetrain, the body and interior are produced by Egyptian manufacturing partner MCV following Volvo Buses’ decision to end complete bus manufacturing operations in Europe in 2023.

Hans Nilsson, chief executive officer of Bergkvara, said the operator plans to continue expanding its sustainable transport operations.

“At Bergkvara, we are very happy with the deal with Volvo Buses, and we are looking forward to putting their electric buses into traffic for our travellers in Skåne and Trelleborg,” Nilsson said.

“We are also hoping for a continued good co-operation as we are expanding our investments in sustainable and safe people transport.”
