Autonomous technology startup Avride announced on Thursday a partnership with food delivery company Grubhub to expand the use of its delivery robots across college campuses in the United States.

Avride’s initial fleet of 100 robots is already operational at Ohio State University, where the company plans to introduce its next-generation models. The university, which also employs robots from other companies like Cartken, has now fully transitioned to robot-based food deliveries.

“Campuses are almost ideal environments for introducing automation in delivery. They are relatively small areas, with a high density of orders—that is where robots shine the most right now,” said Avride CEO Dmitry Polishchuk. He noted that demand for robotic deliveries on college campuses remains strong.

Autonomous delivery robots gained traction after the pandemic as companies and universities sought to address labor shortages, lower costs, and reduce reliance on cars for short-distance deliveries. Firms like Avride and Serve Robotics have been forging partnerships with ride-hailing and delivery companies to accelerate commercialization.

In October, Avride announced a separate collaboration with Uber for food deliveries and robotaxi services. The Austin, Texas-based company, founded in 2017, has completed 200,000 deliveries across five countries. It was formerly part of the self-driving division of Russian tech firm Yandex before spinning off last year amid corporate restructuring.
