Automated Electric Terminal Trucks to Operate at APM Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam by 2027

A fleet of 30 electric, automated terminal trucks is set to go into operation at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II (MVII) in Rotterdam by early 2027. This comes as part of a collaboration agreement between APM, Embotech, a provider of autonomous vehicle technology, and Dutch special vehicle manufacturer Terberg. The move marks a significant step in the transition to more sustainable and efficient port operations.

The project, which began with a successful pilot, will see the full implementation of autonomous technology to enhance the handling of containers. Embotech’s Level 4 Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Kit has been specifically developed to enable trucks to operate safely and reliably in complex, mixed-traffic environments. The technology boasts sub-5cm localization accuracy, allowing for precise maneuvering, such as seamless reversing of container chassis under cranes, even in adverse weather conditions.

Harold Kunst, CEO of APM Terminals MVII, emphasized the importance of the project in the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance Maasvlakte II’s position as Europe’s largest, most efficient, and safest automated terminal. “With this innovative autonomous technology, we are setting a new standard in ports,” Kunst said.

Rob van Hove, CEO of Terberg Special Vehicles, noted the significance of this collaboration in transforming port terminal operations, stating, “Together, we are introducing the first automated fleet in a port terminal operation with mixed traffic.” Terberg is providing its Drive by Wire electric terminal tractors, which will play a critical role in the integration of autonomous systems and the overall assembly of the automated fleet. The project is expected to redefine the future of horizontal transport of containers in ports.
